Course Information
The Stanford Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) training class (EMED 111/211, formerly Surg 111/211), is a full year course designed to give students the theoretical and practical training they need to take the National Registry certification exam and become certified as EMT. The class covers the basic physiology behind many medical and traumatic scenarios, as well as the principles of assessment and emergency treatment that would be performed in the field. Practical skills include CPR, use of an AED, bandaging and splinting, spinal immobilization, and administration of certain medications.
This class provides a unique opportunity to put theoretical knowledge acquired in lectures into practice in real life. It is ideal for motivated students of all backgrounds, and while this class may be particularly appealing to those interested in pursuing careers in medicine, an interest in pursuing a career in medicine is by no means required. The medical training provided will prepare students to become certified as EMTs and to use their skills volunteering, working with an ambulance company or hospital.
Enrollment
All Stanford students, both undergraduate and graduate, may apply for the class. Other Stanford University affiliates (faculty or staff) are acceptable on a space available basis and only under exceptional circumstances. If you are a staff or faculty member of Stanford University, please email us at emtprogram@stanford.edu before submitting an application. We are unfortunately unable to consider applicants who are not currently affiliated with Stanford University, including employees of Stanford Healthcare and Lucille Packard Children's Hospital. Enrollment in the course is not guaranteed and is subject to course director approval.
Important Schedule Information
The class meets twice a week, from 6pm - 8pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays during all three quarters (Fall, Winter, Spring 2106-17). Attendance is mandatory for all class dates. All students are expected to enroll in the class for 4 units unless an exception has been made by the course director.
Course Application
To ensure an optimal training environment, our course requires that the class-size remain within a range that allows each student to receive adequate practice and instruction. Course enrollment is therefore determined by an online application.

Already an EMT?
There are several ways to get involved with Stanford's EMS community if you're already an EMT or EMS provider:
Teaching Assistant / EMED 112/212 A-C
Teaching assistants are at the core of the EMED 111/211 teaching team. TAs are responsible for mentoring the EMT students in EMED 111 and conducting small group practical sessions where EMT skills are taught and reinforced. Other TA responsibilities include holding office hours and assisting with the practical exams and final exams for each quarter.
TAs for EMED 111 are expected to enroll in the Advanced Training and Teaching for the EMT (EMED 112/212) course. EMED 112/212 is designed to provide ongoing training for current EMS providers and to prepare them to teach the topics covered in EMED 111. The curriculum in EMED 112/212 is largely similar to the curriculum of our EMT course, but will cover topics in greater depth and introduce advanced concepts that are not covered by the EMT curriculum.

Stanford EMS (StEMS)
Please head on over to the Stanford EMS (StEMS) website to see what opportunities there are to volunteer as an EMT at campus events. Stanford EMS is a volunteer group whose sponsorship and oversight are provided by the Stanford University Department of Public Safety (SUDPS). Stanford students, faculty and staff members who are EMTs certified in Santa Clara County can apply to join StEMS.
